Taylor Recycling runs some of these same kind of trucks and I can tell you they only get about 3.8 miles per gallon of diesel when they’re driving along, and even less when they sit in traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel.

One cost of long-haul trucking

3.8 Miles per gallon of diesel

x average of 300 miles round trip per truck

x 1,000 trucks per day

= 79,000 gals / day x 350 days per year

= approx. 3 Million gallons of diesel

= tons of NOx, SOx, particulate, CO,
VOC’s & 25% of children in the Bronx have asthma

Remember, that’s on top of the air pollution and fuel used to collect the trash and drive it to the transfer station. Now add in Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
Just four states, led by New York,

export about 15 Million tons of waste each year.

The Majors Help Drive It

  • 2 firms own more than 70% of all landfill capacity within 150 miles of NYC

  • 3 Largest (WM, Allied, Republic) are 67% of the entire industry

  • Top 11 firms are 90% of industry nationally

  • They ship waste to their own landfills in the next state.
