The Vermont Gasifier Project
Commercial-scale R&D plant
Designed as 200 dry tons/day
Over 350 dry tons/day achieved
75% conversion efficiency of wood energy to syngas Btu’s
Gasifier bldg 40x30x100 ft
Product gas used in McNeil Boiler
Less than 2 operators/shift
Although we didn't know it at the time, the recycling system we created turned out to be the perfect complement for the new kind of biomass gasifier that was simultaneously undergoing years of testing in Burlington, Vermont. |
The US Dept. of Energy paid over $53 Million to develop and test this technology at Batelle Memorial Labs in a small pilot plant that was run for over 22,000 hours in a twenty-year test program.
They used wood as feedstock, assuming that it was an abundant, renewable resource. When they scaled up to this commercial-scale demonstration plant, the big surprise after the normal bugs got worked out was that instead of handling 350 tons a day, it could handle more than 500 tons a day.
